Central Venous Pressure: Definition, Uses, and Clinical Overview
Central Venous Pressure is the pressure in the large veins near the right side of the heart. It is often used as an estimate of right atrial pressure (the pressure in the right upper chamber). Clinicians use it to help understand fluid status, venous return, and right-sided heart function. It is commonly referenced in intensive care, anesthesia, emergency care, and cardiovascular wards.
